Qingdao telephone number will incr
ease to
eight digits as of midnight, May 21st
Starting at midnight, May 21st, telephone numbers in the cities of Jinan
and Qingdao increase to eight digits. As of this time, all current phone numbers
will require an additional '8' at the beginning to connect.
The Shandong telecom industry has seen rapid growth in recent years. By the
end of 2004, the number of personal and office telephone lines had already
reached 28,246,000, a number with little room for growth under the current
number of digits. At the same time, deep reforms in the telecom industry
involving the division of China Netcom's previous state monopoly into three
separate telecom companies has complicated the issue of resolving supply and
demand. As of August 2004, the City of Qingdao had already activated 631
exchange numbers, 91.2% of full capacity; Jinan had 568, 82% of total capacity.
It is clear that seven digits can no longer meet the needs of growth in the
telecom industry.
This is an important step for the Shandong telecom industry. Not only will
this extra digit help free up room for growth, it also has a special meaning for

自今年5月21日零時起 濟南青島固定電話號碼將升為8位
本報訊 自今年5月21日零時起，我省濟南、青島兩市的固定電話號碼將升為8位，升位方式為所有固定電話號碼前加"8"。
近年來，我省電信事業發展迅猛。截止到2004年底，全省固定電話用戶已達2824.6萬，固定電話用戶的飛速增長，也使得對固定電話號碼資源的需求越來越大。同時，隨著電信體制改革的不斷深入，固定電話運營商已由原來的一家（中國電信）增加到現在的三家（中國網通、中國電信、中國鐵通），這也進一步加深了固定電話號碼資源的供需矛盾。到2004年8月底，青島市固定電話局號共啟用631個，占可用局號的91.2％；濟南共啟用568個，占可用局號的82％。原有7位編號電話號碼已不能滿足電信業發展的需要。
濟南、青島固定電話號碼升8位，是我省電信業發展的一件大事，有利于提升兩地的城市地位和形象，對促進地方經濟發展、服務2008年奧帆賽都具有重大意義。（張學輝）
